Going Dutch

The acquisition today of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink provides Hull City fans with the big name - in more ways than one - that has been craved throughout the transfer window.

The Dutch striker has been able to join up with the Tigers outside the window's time constraints because he was a free agent, having been released by Celtic in the summer. He has signed for two years.

City evidently needed some firepower up front and also some proper brute strength, and now have five orthodox centre forwards to choose from, a welcome spot of progress considering the total lack of goals which almost cost the club its Premier League status last season.

It's odd how these things work. Vennegoor of Hesselink (is that his surname, or is just Hesselink?) was out of contract when Tony Mowbray arrived at Celtic and was promptly allowed to leave to make way for Marc Antoine Fortune, who turned down the Tigers to go to Glasgow. We now have the much more experienced and prolific Dutchman in our ranks, and although he has yet to head a ball for us, somehow it feels far more reassuring counting him as a City player rather than Fortune.

City have now signed three centre forwards through the summer period, although Kamel Ghilas may well be used as a wide player more often, and one wonders how much time there is left for Daniel Cousin (who must have lots of trips down Old Firm's memory lane to share with the new boy) and Caleb Folan, the strikers who can't be arsed and can't score goals respectively.
